MALAYSIA @ RANDOM (2012)

A Sunway University Department of Performance & Media (DPM) production
Text curated by Leow Puay Tin; Facilitated by Mark Teh & Leow Puay Tin; Performed by DPM March 2011 intake students
Role: Devisor, performer

A Performed Literature production originally created by the March 2011 intake students of the Department of Performance & Media, for their first year Theatre Project module in March 2012. It is an exciting performance of Malaysian Literature: poems, short stories, novels, plays, magazine articles and other interesting texts about Malaysia!

These texts were curated by Leow Puay Tin for the production of Tikam-tikam Malaysia Roulette in SECOND LINK: The Singapore-Malaysia Text Exchange (produced by W!ld Rice Singapore, Five Arts Centre and The Actors Studio in 2006.

"Because these texts are about life in Malaysia itself, so though most of them come from a different generation, we are still able to connect with them and interpret them as young people living in Malaysia. Many young Malaysians nowadays think they have nothing to be proud of and would much rather be in another country, but with these texts we feel we are able to show a part of Malaysia that is most often hidden in the background.

To us, performing these Malaysian texts with their political and social issues is important. We hope that by performing them in the way that we do, we are able to share our experience and understanding of the texts with a new audience. We hope to open up a different Malaysia to the audience."

Performance dates:
7 - 10 March 2012 at Roof Top Theatre Sunway University, Kuala Lumpur
23 - 24 June 2012 at Studio @ Straits, Penang Island
